Outrage After California Senator Scott Wiener Warns America Is on the Brink of Fascism: ‘Classic Projection and a Disgrace’

That’s a pretty heavy word to use

A bitter political feud in Michigan’s Senate race has caught the attention of California State Senator Scott Wiener, who believes the stakes extend far beyond which party wins another seat in Congress. After Democratic Congresswoman Haley Stevens endorsed Republican Mike Rogers over her party’s nominee, Abdul El-Sayed, Wiener warned that the United States was approaching fascism and urged Americans to rally behind the Democratic candidate.

His message on X was not subtle, calling El-Sayed’s campaign essential to protecting the country’s democracy and future. The declaration quickly drew angry responses from critics who questioned Wiener’s judgment, rejected his characterization of the political climate, and accused him of ignoring concerns about the candidate he defended.

Our country is teetering on the brink of fascism, and we need all hands on deck to fight for our democracy. Abdul El-Sayed’s candidacy is a key part of that fight. I stand with him, as should every person who cares about our freedom and our future. https://t.co/4FZU2NIB4z

Wiener’s post on X came alongside footage of Stevens appearing with Rogers at Perfecting Church in Detroit, an unexpected development just two days before Michigan voters head to the polls. Stevens had narrowly lost the Democratic Senate primary to El-Sayed earlier this year, making her decision to endorse his Republican opponent a dramatic break from the Democratic ticket just two days before Election Day.

The disagreement between Stevens and El-Sayed did not begin with the church appearance, as the two had previously clashed over Israel and the war in Gaza. Their tensions resurfaced over an advertisement from an outside political group that Stevens criticized as antisemitic, although El-Sayed maintained that his campaign was not responsible for the advertisement and rejected its contents.

Rather than addressing the disagreements directly, Wiener focused on what he believes the election represents for the country, writing, “Our country is teetering on the brink of fascism, and we need all hands on deck to fight for our democracy.“

The race has become particularly important because Michigan’s Senate seat is being vacated by retiring Democrat Gary Peters, leaving both parties competing for the open seat. With Republicans backing Rogers and Democrats attempting to unite behind El-Sayed, Steves’ endorsement has complicated an already contentious contest at a time when every remaining day of campaigning matters.

Comments and Reactions to Scott Wiener’s Warning About Fascism

Wiener’s warning did not receive the warmest reception from several commenters on X, who accused him of exaggerating the threat to democracy while defending a candidate they strongly opposed. One person even wrote, “classic projection and a disgrace.”

Much of the criticism centered on El-Sayed’s Muslim identity and accusations about supposed connections to the Muslim Brotherhood. El-Sayed has denied having ties to the group and has publicly disavowed it, while no evidence has emerged showing that he is affiliated with the organization. A different commenter wrote, “Vote for the Muslim Brotherhood to save America! You guys are hilarious.“

The appeal for Democratic unity quickly became another heated argument over religion, political loyalty, and the direction of American politics. As the topic continues to gain traction online, users are leaving comments in the replies section below the post.
