With the massive success of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, even more hype has been brought to the realm of Star Wars video games. This includes a revived interest in many of the universe’s classic entries, especially the Star Wars Battlefront series. However, many were disappointed to learn that Star Wars Battlefront 3 was canceled shortly before the game was finished being developed. Luckily, fans are not completely at a loss for new Star Wars content since Respawn Entertainment, the developers of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, are currently working on a new Star Wars FPS game. Whether this is a new entry in the Battlefront series or a completely new IP is currently unknown, though this new FPS will help ease the news of Battlefront 3 being canceled.
For those unfamiliar, Star Wars: Battlefront is a series of Star Wars games where players take part in large-scale battles, playing as famous characters and at locations from the movies. Players can unlock the opportunity to play as hero or villain characters, including Darth Vader, Han Solo, and more, to have a massive impact on the battlefield. The series recently had a revival by the company EA, with the company creating two new games for the beloved franchise. Though many were waiting for a Star Wars: Battlefront 3, it was recently revealed that while the game was in development, it was canceled near the end of its development. Although Respawn Entertainment’s new project is highly unlikely to be a new Star Wars: Battlefront game, the company’s reputation makes them perfect for a new FPS game set in that universe.
Respawn Entertainments Past Games Make Them Perfect for the New Star Wars FPS
In the past, Respawn Entertainment has been responsible for massive FPS games, including Titanfall and Apex Legends. These two games have been very influential and genre-defining in both the FPS and Battle Royale genres, respectively, introducing interesting movement and combat. For example, Titanfall allowed for some very intuitive and unique maneuvers that players could pull off, both inside and outside of a giant mech. On the other hand, Apex Legends helped revitalize the Battle Royale genre with cool characters and abilities that set the game apart from the crowd. With Respawn Entertainment’s history in unique shooters, many have speculated that this new Star Wars FPS will introduce some new innovations that the Star Wars: Battlefront series would have difficulty reproducing.
Jedi Survivor’s Lightsaber Combat Would Make a Great Addition
Due to the success of Star Wars: Jedi Survivor, fans would love to see a larger focus on lightsaber combat in the new Star Wars FPS game. Where previous games make lightsaber combat feel very rough and unimpactful, the combat of Jedi: Survivor is extremely fresh and makes it fun to pull off combos. Though this may be difficult to pull off in first-person, there are a few ways the company could do it. For example, normal gameplay could take place in the first-person but shift to third-person when a character with a lightsaber is chosen and take on a style more similar to that of Jedi: Survivor. Alternatively, the game could also take on an almost Skyrim-esque first-person perspective with the lightsabers. However, this may sacrifice some combat fluidity.
Extra Movement Options Could Make the Game Closer to the Star Wars Universe
Besides the combat, Respawn Entertainment could introduce some of their movement innovations that were in their previous projects to the new Star Wars FPS game. Before Star Wars: Battlefront 3 was canceled, previous game entries would include some interesting movement using jetpacks and force powers. However, most of the time, using options like this felt clunky. Respawn Entertainment would do an amazing job taking these options and adding a level of polish to help turn the new game into a more movement-based shooter. This could also apply to Star Wars vehicles, which are also prominently featured in almost every new Star Wars game.
Though in the end, many people are disappointed with the cancellation of Star Wars Battlefront 3, Respawn Entertainment’s new Star Wars FPS will help take the sting out of the beloved series removal. Sadly, however, very little information is actually known about the project currently, leaving almost everything up to speculation. In the end, with Jedi: Survivor’s success and Respawn Entertainment’s strong showings in the past, things are looking up for the Star Wars video game universe.
