A Newport, Rhode Island bride was wiping away tears during her wedding ceremony when she thought the priest had offered her a tissue. She grabbed it, wiped her nose and cheeks, and only then discovered the problem: it wasn’t a tissue at all. Lauren had grabbed part of the priest’s vestments, something she jokingly described as his “holy cloth.”
Lauren Bruce shared the wedding mishap on TikTok, where it quickly became her most-watched video, racking up more than 25 million views and 2.2 million likes.
The Rhode Island woman, as seen in the clip, was holding hands with her husband. They were getting married, and Lauren became visibly emotional, shedding some tears.
As the priest continued with the ceremony, Lauren apparently mistook part of his vestments for a tissue being offered to her. She grabbed the fabric and proceeded to dab her nose and both cheeks.
Her husband’s reaction only made the moment better. He watched silently as Lauren used the priest’s vestment to dry her face before she finally realized what she’d done. Panicking, she began to laugh uncontrollably. The priest attempted to say the blessing prayer, but was cut off mid-sentence. According to Lauren, he was “too stunned to speak.”
Bride’s ‘Holy Cloth’ Mistake Has TikTok Cringing
The very brief, albeit hilarious moment got many reactions, mostly from viewers who got themselves caught in second-hand embarrassment. One said, “Find another church IMMEDIATELY.” Another one asked, “Does this keep you up at night by any chance?” Lauren responded, “It sure does.”
Other viewers shared stories of their own. One wrote, “During my confirmation classes, I did my first face-to-face confession… Then, the priest put his hand up to bless me, and I high-fived him.” Another one remembered walking toward the front of the church, believing it was the Children’s Moment. She added, “It was a family I didn’t know that was baptizing their babies…and I just awkwardly stood up there with them.”
Despite the mortifying mix-up, Lauren made it through the ceremony and married her husband with the priest still smiling along. Millions of TikTok views later, however, the moment she mistook his vestment for a tissue may be almost as memorable as the wedding itself. And judging by Lauren’s admission that the mistake still keeps her up at night, she hasn’t forgotten it either.
