Rick and Morty Season 3’s “Opening Scene” Was a Fun Surprise

Should have seen it coming

On behalf of Rick and Morty fans everywhere, I’d like to let Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland know how much I despise them for what they just posted to Adult Swim Australia’s YouTube account. In what fans believed to be an exclusive peek at the Season 3 opening scene, instead, Rick-Rolled (better yet, Rick-and-Morty rolled).

On a serious note, the teaser is nothing short of brilliant. It is filled with scenes from the previous—and possibly some from the upcoming—season(s) spliced together to sing out the lyrics of the famous troll song performed by Rick Astley, “Never Gonna Give You Up.” Fans have been eagerly awaiting the next installment in the series, especially after the events that occurred at the end of the second season.

For the less informed, Rick and Morty began as a crudely drawn (and creepy) parody of Back to the Future’s Marty Mcfly and Doc Brown, on YouTube as Doc and Mharti. Rick and Morty eventually got picked up by Adult Swim and premiered on December 2, 2013, and picked up a cult following ever since.

Now it’s been well over a year since the last episode of the hit Adult Swim cartoon, and fans have begun to worry they might be able to read Winds of Winter before seeing Season 3. But even this senseless trolling is a sign that Harmon and company are aware of that, as the fact that they poke fun at themselves for it means they are still the same goofballs they’ve always been.

Nonetheless, patience must prevail, as there is no doubt that the Rick and Morty team are working as hard as possible, while simultaneously releasing the best possible product they can.
