Opening another person’s mail is a federal felony. The punishment is up to five years in prison, and that doesn’t include fines and additional charges for being on private property. This is just one more law that ICE agents ignore in their pursuit of “justice.” As one Ring camera captured Ohio agents committing this felony in broad daylight, many are demanding their own versions of justice.
In the video posted on Reddit, we see several ICE agents approaching the door of a private residence. It’s clear the homeowner is not at home, but the camera captured everything. As they begin to snoop around, one agent picks up a stack of mail. Another agent is heard saying, “They can see us on the camera.” The agent holding the mail responds, “Yeah, but it’s abandoned mail. I just want to see if his name is on there.”
The agent blatantly disregards the homeowner’s rights and opens a package. The agents’ faces are also clearly visible since they’re not wearing masks. It could be argued that either ignorance or ego fueled their actions, but that has yet to be determined. On Reddit, viewers are responding with calls to action over the laws broken.
“How is that abandoned mail when it’s literally in front of her door at her address. It’s terrifying that the first officer warned about the camera. Makes you wonder what they would have done otherwise,” says one user. “To call them low-rent security guards who would probably not even qualify for a mall job is giving them too much credit,” another user replies.
One Reddit user pointed out the obvious, saying, “Hasn’t this been a major offense since like… the Revolutionary War?” Another, frustrated, replied, “This is what Americans and Trump idolaters voted for. Aren’t y’all tired of winning yet?” As the thread grew, more viewers expressed shock as others seemed unsurprised by ICE’s actions. “Federal agents committing federal crimes is always a good look,” one Reddit user remarked sarcastically.
