Being a grifter can make for intense work. Netflix has released the trailer for Ripley, a new limited series with Andrew Scott as the titled character (seen below). It is an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s best-selling five-book series from Steven Zaillian, the Oscar-winning writer from Schindler’s List. The streaming service’s series will also feature Dakota Fanning, Johnny Flynn, Elliot Sumner, Maurizio Lombardi, Margherita Buy, and John Malkovich.
The series follows the titled character as a grifter in 1960s New York. He gets a job from a wealthy man to go to Italy to convince his son to come home. The gig seems simple enough, but from the logline, it will “begin a complex life of deceit, fraud, and murder.”
Netflix Releases Intense Trailer for Ripley as Andrew Scott Is a Skilled Grifter
The series has jumped around before finding its current home. It was reported last year from Deadline that the original plan to release on Showtime changed, leading to a shift over to Netflix. The plan still remains to only adapt the first novel, The Talented Mr. Ripley. If it is successful, we may get adaptations of the other books and continue seeing what trouble Andrew Scott gets as Tom Ripley.
The Shindler’s List writer wrote and directed all eight episodes of the limited series. He executive produces with Garrett Basch, Clayton Townsend, Guymon Casady, Ben Forkner, Sharon Levy, and Philipp Keel. The Emmy-winning star produces.
Andrew Scott is continuing his string of major projects with Ripley. He recently did All of Us Strangers with Paul Mescal. His other notable works include His Dark Materials, School of Roars, 1917, Black Mirror, Fleabag, Sherlock, and Spectre. When it comes to his awards, he won a BAFTA for his work on Sherlock, an Emmy nomination for his episode of Black Mirror, and Golden Globe nominations for All of Us Strangers and Fleabag.
The series will drop on the streaming service on April 4.
