Roblox has announced that it is deploying new safety measures to protect the younger players on the extremely popular platform. The company detailed in a blog post that in the next few months, it will start limiting communication features for players who are under the age of 13. On top of that, new parental controls will also become available, and the new Roblox content guidelines have also been revealed today.
Most importantly, once these new changes go live, any user who is under the age of 13 will not be able to message any other Roblox player out of games. The same can be said about the broadcast option, which will limit underage players unless they are in a game or a Roblox experience.
Matt Kaufman, the chief safety officer at Roblox, said that:
By default, users younger than 13 will not be able to directly message others. Parents can change this setting in Parental Controls.
Roblox has also launched new remote management of parental controls, this is a big change from the past when things like spending limits could only be adjusted by accessing the child’s account locally. This will give parents more granular controls which will let them keep an eye on how much time their child is spending in Roblox.
The new Parental Controls dashboard will show the average screen time the child has had in the last week, as well as their entire friends list. This will also allow parents to add screen-time limits after which the game will lock out the player until the next day starts.
Content will not be age-restricted only, it will now have labels by what type it is. Anyone under the age of 9 will only be able to access the experiences that are labeled minimal or mild. This can be changed through the parental controls, however.
The minimal and mild tags just explain what level of crude humor or physical violence is available in the Roblox experience in question.
