This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information.

Iconic sports have always had a place in Psyonix’s version of a transforming extreme sport. With fans asking for more American Football representation, the time finally seems right for there to be an entirely new way to play. With Rocket League joining in on the seasonal fun, it seems like the team at Psyonix is bringing over the football cheer in an entirely new way this year. Having previously teamed up with the NFL for various team cosmetics just this past December, Rocket League is joining the Superbowl fanaticism with even more themed cosmetics. Not only will there be all of the previously available NFL cosmetics, but also an entirely new challenge system for players to unlock more rewards. Announced in a blog post are the new event and limited-time mode details that will take place a week before Super Bowl LV.

How Does Rocket League Football Work?

Unlike Rocket League’s regular 3 on 3 format, Gridiron is played with 4 players on each team. With Psyonix’s iterations of hockey and basketball all using new forms of a ball, the new event is no exception with Rocket League football finally becoming a reality. The rules of the game are what one might expect as every player has spikes attached to their vehicle allowing for the ball to the attached to the roof. Performing the double jump while holding the ball will drop it but also allows for passing with directional dodges.

With point structures similar to real football, the new gamemode seems like an upgrade to the well-beloved community favorite, spike rush. While the mode is certainly going to be an interesting addition to the already numerous iterations of different iconic sports represented in Rocket League, the need for it to become a main side mode like hockey and hoops is yet to be seen. It all kicks off on February 2 and lasts until Monday, February 8.

So what do you think about the new mode coming to Rocket League next month? Be sure to let us know in the comments if you’re excited to jump into the football action.

Rocket League is free-to-play on all console platforms and on the Epic Games Store for PC.
