Willow might be taking on the form of a Disney+ series, says, director Ron Howard.
Having sat down with Collider, the Solo director discussed details of the series, which will be based on the 1988 high fantasy movie of the same name.
“We are developing Willow for Disney Plus,” said Howard. “And I don’t know about directing or not, but Jon Kasdan is writing, he’s very passionate about it, great job. We don’t have a green light yet, but if it goes, I’ll certainly want to roll up my sleeves and be a part of that because that would be great to revisit that world.”
Ron Howard directed the original film after being approached by George Lucas in 1985, with the film’s story based on a story by the Star Wars creator. So any attempt to recapture the magic of the original film would be great for its fans.
“In this world of these event series, they really do look to the showrunners and the key creatives to tell them their vision,” Howard continued. “It’s one of the reasons why TV has gotten so good, is that they really are looking at the showrunners as authors of something that they’re deeply passionate about. And Jon is deeply passionate about Willow, which tickles me to no end.”
Jon Kasdan is the son of Lawrence Kasdan, who has penned a few scripts for Lucas’s movies, including The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Return of the Jedi. If his father could write the scripts to such iconic movies, then it’ll be interesting to see what the younger Kasdan can cook up for Willow
Ending the interview on this topic, Howard revealed a juicy tidbit on the timeline of the show.
“Warwick Davis is going to be in it, and so yes, I think it’s safe to say it’s decades later,” said the former Happy Days star.
