A New Jersey woman is going viral after sharing a confrontation with a man she says repeatedly interrupted her workout in an attempt to get her off a gym machine before she finished her sets. While many viewers applauded her for standing her ground, others argued she could have simply let the man work in between sets instead of turning the interaction into a confrontation.
User @ni.yahhh__ shared the clip to TikTok, which opens with the creator confronting the man. “This is your second time coming towards me,” she says. “You’re gonna leave me alone. I don’t know you.” The New Jersey gymgoer later explained that the encounter shown in the video was actually the third time the man had approached her.
“The first time he came to me, he was like, ‘Oh, this is my last workout for the day. I wanna use this machine,'” she recalls. “I said, ‘Okay, well I have a couple more sets. I’m gonna let you know when I’m done.'”
According to Niyah, the man then asked if he could “get in real quick,” but she declined because she was still using the machine. She says he came back a second time, then returned again moments later. “That’s when I started recording him,” she says.
She claims she reported the incident to the front desk afterward but says the man was only given “a slap on the wrist.” Niyah also addressed the man’s assertion that she wasn’t respecting her elders. “I respect my elders, but that does not mean that I have to get up out of my seat to give you the machine.”

Many commenters praised the New Jersey creator for refusing to give up the machine before finishing her workout.”Rosa Parks would be proud of you,” one commenter wrote.
Some joked about how they would have handled the situation.”I would have moved my whole life into that machine. The gym would be asking me for rent. ‘Sorry sir I only have 100 more sets,'” one viewer commented.
Others focused on the man’s behavior, with several questioning why he appeared to be dressed in business casual instead of workout clothes. One user noted, “He wasn’t even dressed for the machine.” Many also argued the situation had little to do with respecting elders, with one person replying, “This was not about respect. It’s about PRIVILEGE.”
Not everyone saw the interaction as cut and dry, however. There were users who felt she could have let the man work in between sets instead of refusing outright.
“What’s wrong with someone working in while you are resting? That used to be totally common,” one commenter wrote. Another added, “Why not just be a nice person and share the machine. I did that the other day, same situation, but I shared the machine instead of putting somebody on TikTok.“
Primarily though, many commenters felt the interaction went beyond simply sharing workout equipment. They argued it was part of a broader pattern of white privilege in public spaces rather than a disagreement over gym etiquette.
