Salma Hayek and Adam Sandler starred together in the 2010 comedy movie Grown Ups. After the movie, Salma Hayek’s career took a different turn as the actress did something different from her usual roles. Read on to know more about this.
Adam Sandler Changed Salma Hayek’s Career
Salma Hayek and Adam Sandler’s movie broke the typecast of sultry and charming females that the actress played all her life.
A new profile published by British GQ on Monday revealed this phase of the actress’ career. She had trouble getting a role in comedy for the first 20 years because she was deemed too sexy for the genre.
However, Salma credits funnyman Adam Sandler for changing all that for her. “My entire life I wanted to do comedy and people wouldn’t give me comedies.”
The 56-year-old revealed she didn’t land a comedy role until she met Adam Sandler in her forties. Adam put her in his movie, breaking the stereotype around her.
The Frida star added that producers turned her down for comedy because of her sex appeal. According to them, she ought not to “have a sense of humor or be smart” because she is sexy. “You were not allowed to be funny in the ’90s,” Salma lamented.
The From Dusk Till Dawn star added that she is not bitter about being limited to her looks in Hollywood.
The actress confessed that it grieved her then. However, she is happy that she can do different genres at a time when many thought she would expire.
Salma Hayek’s Role In Magic Mike Is Like Her In Real Life
Salma Hayek’s career is no longer where it used to be. After years of awards and accolades, and resilience, the actress is now a feature in diverse genres.
Interestingly, her new film Magic Mike’s Last Dance isn’t a comedy. However, Salma disrupts norms while embracing her sexiness in it.
The third Magic Mike movie sees her play the love interest of the franchise’s mainstay, Channing Tatum.
A description for the film sets Salma’s character as a “wealthy socialite” who lures Mike “with an offer he can’t refuse…and an agenda all her own.”
In her conversation with British GQ, Salma said that her character in the movie is similar to herself in real life.
“More than being a movie about an older woman falling in love with a younger guy, it’s about a middle-aged woman that has a lot of potentials and is sick of being undermined her entire life,” she said.
Salma Hayek’s career has evolved over the years, especially as she played a major role in the Hitman’s Bodyguard’s wife. Hopefully, she will continue to get more roles that harness her full potential.
