They’re all over the news, all over the country, and all over your neighborhoods, but this time around, some ICE agents (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) prefer not to draw attention to themselves while arresting immigrants or people of color. ICE officials have even politely requested that the faces of their agents be blurred after one particular round of arrests in San Francisco, California.
The odd request was sent to The San Francisco Standard by none other than the federal government and the ICE spokesperson. The Standard notably published photos and videos of a May 27 ICE arrest, which took place in the San Francisco Immigration Court, where four people were handcuffed and stuffed into a van. Turns out the ICE spokesperson, Richard Beam, didn’t like this kind of reportage and sent this email to the media:
“I have a request to ask if you would consider blurring the faces of our officers and agents. Out of a concern for the safety of our personnel, I wanted to simply ask,” requests ICE’s Richard Beam, transcript courtesy of The Standard.
Beam added that ICE doesn’t normally make such requests (of course, they don’t) and that ICE also respects the media’s right to freedom of speech and information. ICE is simply concerned for the safety of its agents while they’re violently kidnapping immigrants, some of whom were merely being arrested on suspicion.
So far, The San Francisco Standard has stated that they didn’t comply with ICE’s request as it’s not really a mandate. The request also poses a certain level of difficulty to comply with since some ICE agents appear to be undercover and have no visible identification, making them easy to consider as mere civilians.
This isn’t the first time the federal government has interacted with the media regarding ICE’s operations in San Francisco. As early as February 2025, San Francisco’s KCBS radio station was investigated by the Federal Communications Commission for merely reporting the appearance of ICE agents and their vehicles.
Request Denied?
ICE hasn’t exactly built the best goodwill out of all government agencies (or any goodwill at all), so their request for public anonymity and privacy has come under scrutiny not just from the media but also from regular people online. As expected, many have mocked them for such a ridiculous request since they want privacy while operating in a public space and being violent.
Other people are of the opinion that any law enforcement officer should have their face shown and be visible, especially if they’re confident that they’re not breaking any laws or trampling rights. But one of the simplest explanations for ICE’s request is that their agents know what they’re doing is ethically wrong.
