A woman who visited a Dollar Tree store in Pennsylvania had to alert the employees after she noticed something suspicious about the card reader at the checkout counter. What she found not only shocked the other customers present but has netizens debating whether the machine had been tampered with by someone inside the store.
The incident reportedly took place at one of the store locations near Broad Street and Wingohocking Street in Philadelphia. According to the woman, who shared the video on Instagram, she spotted an extra keypad-like device layered over the legitimate payment terminal while trying to pull her card out of the machine.
Suspecting something was off, she called an employee over to look at it. At first, staff members told her there was only one keypad on the machine, but after she insisted something had been added, one of the employees reached toward the device and began pulling at it.
Moments later, a separate piece came loose from the machine, appearing to confirm the woman’s suspicion. The reaction inside the store quickly shifted from skepticism to shock.
The object is suspected to be a card skimmer, a tool used to capture customers’ payment information without their knowledge. The woman also informed the staff that she would be reporting the incident to the police.
Netizens React to the Dollar Tree Incident
The video was later posted to X by @LASHYBILLS, where several viewers criticized the situation. “Scamming people already struggling,” one person wrote. Another said, “Stealing money from people who shop at Dollar Tree is diabolical work.”
Some speculated that those working at the store may have been involved. “You can’t tell me the store employees aren’t in on it,” one comment read. Someone else added, “Cashier wasn’t shocked enough for me personally.”
A few others praised the woman for paying close attention, with one writing, “I need to take her shopping with me- great eye!!” and another saying, “What a great catch by the lady!”
Some netizens cautioned others against jumping to conclusions. One wrote, “Unfortunately it could have been anyone who put that there, not necessarily the store manager or cashier.”
As of now, the woman has not shared an update on whether she reported it to the police.
