Sea of Thieves has announced a new three-part collaboration with Lucasfilm, bringing the world of Monkey Island and its protagonist, Guybrush Threepwood, to the game. Now, players have the opportunity to meet and face off against classic franchise characters. These include the likes of Guybrus, Elaine, and LeChuck. However, as many fans know, the ending of Return to Monkey Island placed Guybrush into a bit of unknown territory. Luckily, this expansion will take place before the events of that game, so those repercussions won’t factor into the DLC. Hopefully, though, all comedic pirate hijinks of the Monkey Island franchise will be included.
As many already know, the Monkey Island series is a franchise of classic adventure games, created by LucasArts. In these games, players control the clumsy yet good-natured and witty pirate Guybrush Threepwood. Guybrush journeys to uncover the secrets of Monkey Island, find true love, and defeat the ghost captain, LeChuck. As mentioned, the DLC should take place before Return to Monkey Island, directly after The Curse of Monkey Island.
What Happened to Guybrush Threepwood?
Before the events of Return to Monkey Island, Guybrush and Elaine sailed off to celebrate their marriage at the end of The Curse of Monkey Island. In Sea of Thieves, sometime before what should be the events of The Legend of Monkey Island, Guybrush himself became the governor of Melee Island. At the same time, however, he has become reclusive and hasn’t left the Governor’s Mansion in a long time. Additionally, the Voodoo Lady states that “LeChuck has turned the memories of this island into a prison for Guybrush.” The island she mentions is most likely the titular Monkey Island. This possibly hints that sometime in the past year, LeChuck has placed Guybrush in some sort of trap, forcing him to relive the memories of his adventures.
Sea of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island Places Guybrush As Governor
Based on what we see during the trailer, Sea of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island’s Guybrush is playing with dolls of himself and Elaine. His unkempt beard, as well as the decrepit and empty nature of the mansion all point to the fact that Guybrush has been obsessing over Monkey Island and its past secrets. Therefore, it will most likely be up to the player to defeat LeChuck and break Guybrush out of this spell.
Sea of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island Sees Guybrush and Elaine’s Recent Honeymoon
As mentioned, the story of Sea of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island will follow the events of The Curse of Monkey Island. The game will therefore take place after the marriage of Guybrush and Elaine. Thus, it will focus on the couple’s honeymoon and the events that take place directly thereafter.
In the end, this may seem like a bit of an odd mash-up of game genres. However, some fans have expected a Sea of Thieves and Monkey Island collaboration, since the two share such similar themes and settings. Although following the established lore of the Monkey Island series can be a bit difficult at times, the new Sea of Thieves adventure is sure to be a treat for fans of both games. As the release date approaches, more information should be announced. Until then, many will be left wondering how Guybrush got into his predicament in Sea of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island.
