Secret Invasion recently dropped the bombshell that Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) is married to a Skrull named Varra (Charlaine Woodard). For those who need a refresher on the Skrulls’ role in the MCU, they are a shape-shifting alien race that first appeared in Captain Marvel (2019). This new series sees a group of Skrulls (posing as humans) go rogue, causing hostilities between humans and the alien race. A flashback shows that Nick Fury entered into a romantic relationship with a Skrull. So, let’s examine an important question: is Nick Fury being married to a Skrull in Secret Invasion morally sound?
Nick Fury’s Marriage in Secret Invasion Is Nothing New
Nick Fury’s marriage in Secret Invasion isn’t the first interplanetary relationship in a comic book story. While Superman may look like a human, he is, in fact, a Kryptonian. But few have gotten upset over his relationship with Lois Lane or the fact that they have kids together. There’s also the relationship between Wanda Maximoff and Vision in the MCU, essentially a human dating a sentient machine. As weird as that may be, it didn’t stop us from loving WandaVision.
So, Nick Fury’s being married to an alien in Secret Invasion isn’t new to the genre. However, certain factors in the story make the morality a bit more complicated.
Nick Fury’s Skrull Marriage: Morally Sound or Problematic?
Samuel L. Jackson addressed this relationship, saying, “It’s good that the audience knows that Fury has someone and he’s not alone in the fight or the world, and it could be even better that they know that someone is a Skrull. My Skrullmance.” It’s undoubtedly good that Fury isn’t alone. And with tensions between Skrulls and humans being what they are, their marriage could symbolize peace.
However, there are some issues to consider with this marriage. For one thing, Varra seems to live her whole life on earth in her human disguise, including in her home with Fury. Is he in love with her or the face she puts on for him? Would he be willing to be affectionate with her in her natural bald, pointy-eared, green-skinned form? If not, then it’s arguable that he doesn’t really love the true her.
There’s also the question of their family. Thus far, we don’t know if the couple had kids. But then, we never knew they had each other. Is there a family we don’t know about, and how did they handle the identity issues of being half human and half Skrull? Those tensions would undoubtedly be worse given the war breaking out with the Skrulls in Secret Invasion.
Nick Fury With a Skrull Wife: Yay or Nay?
Determining the morality of Nick Fury being married to a Skrull in Secret Invasion is complicated. There are even theories that Nick Fury may be a Skrull himself. At this point, all we can do is keep watching Secret Invasion and let the story play out.
