It’s weird enough to think Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) is married. But to a Skrull? That’s the bombshell that the MCU series Secret Invasion decided to drop on us. The shapeshifting alien race was introduced in Captain Marvel, and they have been Fury’s allies ever since. However, this series sees a group of rogue Skrulls stirring up conflict with the human race. And with all this happening, Nick Fury is married to a Skrull. Several complications are already attached to a marriage like this, and a developing war between humans and Skrulls is just the icing on the cake. Let’s examine Nick Fury’s marriage to a Skrull and its implications in Secret Invasion.
Who is Nick Fury’s Skrull Wife?
Nick Fury’s wife (Charlayne Woodard) disguises herself as a human named Priscilla. In reality, she is a Skrull named Varra. This character has appeared in the comics, but only as a side character. Secret Invasion appears to be putting its own unique spin on Varra.
At the beginning of episode three, a flashback in a diner reveals that the two know each other. While he doesn’t initially recognize her in the form of Priscilla, he eventually identifies her as Varra, whom he knows is a Skrull. While we don’t exactly know what she does, she has some connection to Fury’s work. She hands Fury an envelope saying, “This should put Dreykov’s men on their heels.” Dreykov is the creator of the Widows and the main antagonist of the movie Black Widow.
Fury is attracted to Varra’s new face, and the signs of a romance begin to form. However, being married to Nick Fury comes with its baggage, and it appears to have affected Varra over the years.
Is Varra Still Loyal to Nick Fury?
Varra is devastated by the long absences Fury has taken in recent years. This includes disappearing in the five-year Blip and returning only to depart into space. Varra explains that the Blip made her a grieving widow. She also explains that she thought they would reconnect when he returned. Instead, he left her a second time; only it was by choice this time. This has taken a toll on her, and hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.
Fury asks Varra if she’s been in touch with Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir), the leader of the rebel Skrulls. Even Fury is worried about where her loyalty lies, saying he needs to be sure of who she became while he was gone. All she says is, “I became me. The me I was before you.” Since this character has only just been introduced, we aren’t sure exactly what she means. Does she mean she is the spy that was willing to gather information for Fury or have her loyalties shifted?
Episode three ends on a cliffhanger, with Varra acquiring a gun and getting a phone call from a mysterious man telling her where to meet him. When she says, “I need to speak to Gravik,” the man responds, “Yeah, well, you’re talking to me.” This voice strongly resembles James “Rhodey” Rhodes (Don Cheadle). Varra’s loyalties are already in question, but things are even more mysterious now.
What Does ‘Secret Invasion’ Have In Store For Varra
We are only three episodes into Secret Invasion, and it’s hard to tell where this story is going. The fact that Nick Fury is married at all, let alone to a Skrull, is already a surprise. Only time will tell what Secret Invasion has in store for Nick Fury and his marriage to Varra.
