Find out why she wants a public apology from Oprah.
Mo’Nique And Oprah Winfrey Have A Long-Lasting Feud
Mo’Nique and Oprah Winfrey’s feud is once again up for discussion. The comedian rehashed the origin and present state of her relationship with Oprah in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
Their feud started when the actress declined to go on a tour to promote her film. She met Lee Daniels in 2004 and appeared in his directorial debut, Shadowboxer the next year. She also starred in the 2009 film Precious.
The film was up for awards, but Mo’Nique chose to stay with her husband and young children at the time. Hence, she didn’t participate in the promotion campaigns for the movie for which Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey were producers.
Her relationship with Oprah worsened after that. The latter hosted Mo’Nique’s family on an episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show. However, she didn’t invite Mo’Nique herself.
Oprah called Mo’Nique before taping the episode. She said Mo’Nique’s brother, Gerald Imes, reached out wanting to apologize to her for molesting her when they were children. The 55-year-old approved it but was shocked when her entire family appeared in it, and they “downplayed the abuse” Mo’Nique suffered, per THR.
Mo’Nique tried to contact Oprah to discuss the situation but was unsuccessful. In 2014, Mo’Nique and Winfrey wound up at the same event. After trying to pull Oprah for a private conversation, Mo’Nique decided to talk in front of all the event’s attendees.
“I said, ‘Since you didn’t want to return my calls, for whatever reason, I’m going to say this right here,'” Mo’Nique recalled, sharing that she then questioned Oprah on her parents’ involvement in the episode.
According to Mo’Nique, Oprah said they tagged along with her brother to the studio, unbeknownst to her. She claimed Oprah said something along the lines of “If I’ve done anything to offend you, I apologize.'”
Mo’Nique Wants A Public Apology From Oprah
Mo’Nique wants Oprah’s apology, and she wants it done publicly. She talked about how director Lee Daniels, who, along with Oprah and Tyler Perry, offended her, apologized publicly.
That public apology happened at a concert date on Staten Island.
“I don’t know if it’s ever been done in history — that a big Hollywood director came out and apologized to an actress for a wrongdoing,” Mo’Nique noted.
Mo’Nique says her life is in “a chapter of forgiveness” now, but it doesn’t mean she’s ready to forget.
As she got from Lee, Mo’Nique “still demands and expects public apologies from Oprah and Tyler,” THR reports.
Nevertheless, Mo’Nique has found peace thanks to her family. “When you are good on the inside, I believe it shows up on the outside,” the comedian said.
The media personality said, “it’s a new chapter” for her because of her family. Her twins are graduating high school, and her grandkids are moving up in their classes as well. “Those things, for me, are the priority.”
Mo’Nique and Oprah Winfrey’s feud has lasted for far too long. Seeing as Mo’Nique wants Oprah’s apology publicly, it may take longer to end. Hopefully, it ends soon.
