Rob Liefeld, the co-creator of Deadpool and Cable, is back with the introduction of Shatterstorm. This new character makes her debut in the second issue of Deadpool: Badder Blood. That is a miniseries sequel to Deadpool’s first graphic novel, Deadpool: Bad Blood. This new character bears a striking resemblance, and name, to Mojoworld’s Shatterstorm. However, Liefeld guarantees readers that she is her own woman entirely.
Introducing Shatterstorm
While the resemblance between Shatterstorm and Shatterstar does not stop at their names, Liefeld ensures fans that this isn’t just a female Shatterstar. Speaking exclusively to Comic Book, the Deadpool creator shares how Shatterstorm is different from Shatterstar and how she came to be involved in this sequel:
“Shatterstorm is her own woman entirely and not a derivative. [She] hails from Mojoworld and was born and bred to fight in the same Arena Games that forged Shatterstar, a legend among all Gladiators in the Mojoverse. With a contract on Deadpool’s head, the mercenary Shatterstorm is looking to [cash in].”
The new character makes their cover debut on the Liefeld variant for Deadpool: Badder Blood #2.
Introducing Even More New Characters
Unfortunately for the “Merc with a Mouth,” Shatterstorm isn’t the only new mercenary in town. A new group of mercenaries also debut in the sequel series. Specifically, a team that was originally meant for Liefeld’s original run with New Mutants and X-Force almost four decades ago. They are known as “The 5.” As Liefeld shares,
“They pop in for a quick appearance in the first issue, alongside Shatterstorm who takes center stage in issue #2!”
This is all part of Liefeld’s initial plan to “build out Deadpool’s supporting cast and Rogue’s Gallery.” It is one of the things that pushed Liefeld to craft the sequel. The ability to have so many new faces and characters pop up made the sequel the most fun that the comics creator ever had crafting a comic.
Deadpool: Badder Blood #2 will be on sale on July 19, 2023.
