Shenmue 3 director Yu Suzuki could use some more money to make the best possible version of the game. This is of course, after Shenmue 3 reached its crowdfunding goal on Kickstarter in only 10 hours. The fan donations, along with financial support from Sony and Publisher Shibuya Productions, will fund the game.
“Kickstarter’s not the only source of money,” said Suzuki in an interview with Eurogamer. “There’s also funding from Sony and Shibuya Productions. Before we started Kickstarter, we had goals set around the budget – so if we only got $6 million, we’d create Shenmue 3 based upon what we could do with that $6 million.
“We’re still trying to gather funds. Obviously, the more money we have the more we can do. Even if we don’t get as much budget as the previous games, we’ll still make this game.”

Suzuki went on to note that the extra money can be used to improve the graphics or the story. But regardless of the money, the game will be interesting and something the fans will want to play.
“I could do with a bit more money. The game itself doesn’t have to be gorgeous visually — a lot of the money these days goes into the graphics. If we perhaps compromise on the graphics and put more into the story, we can make a good game. The most important thing, to me, is that the game’s interesting, and that it’s something people want to play.“
Shenmue 3’s original crowdfunding goal was $2 million. They ending up reaching a goal of roughly $6 million. And while every developer could use more money to make their game better, it does makes one wonder; what would the game have looked like at its original goal.
To clear some things up, Sony and Shibuya Productions will not get a cent of the Kickstarter money. Their role in Shenmue 3’s development is the production, marketing, and publishing.
For those that missed the Kickstarter campaign, more money can be given to the games developer, Y’s Net, through PayPal. This program is called the “Slackers Backer Campaign,” and it offers its own set of rewards. The campaign will end on December 30th.
Shenmue 3 is expected to release on December 2017 for PlayStation 4 and PC.
