If you’ve ever watched the second season of the Netflix Korean series Squid Game, there’s a moment when the Salesman approaches homeless people with a small challenge. He offers them a piece of bread in one hand and a lottery ticket in the other. They can choose only one. Most of them, if memory serves, go for the lottery ticket, dreaming of a bigger payoff even though the odds are slim. None of them win, of course. You could debate whether they made the right call, but it’s an unforgettable scene about how people weigh needs and wants. Something a little like that played out in real life for a Detroit content creator, though she didn’t realize it at first.
The woman shared a TikTok describing how she met a homeless man who first asked for money. Instead of handing him cash, she offered to buy him something to eat, which she felt was a straightforward, practical choice. However, instead of food, the man said he wanted something else entirely. A speaker. When she asked why, he replied, “Well, because I love music.” Intrigued and still willing to help, she agreed to take him inside the store. The moment they stepped in, the man began picking out item after item. Besides the speaker, he grabbed headphones and a pillow.
The woman was shocked when he came up to the register with all that and joked, “You got a lot of stuff, don’t you?” To which the man responded, “All this sh*t cheap,” as if that settled everything. In the end, she bought the items for him and later laughed about how he had chosen music gear over food.
