One of these characters is Mattis, a merchant who will try and sell you an item known as Mattis Key in Baldur’s Gate 3. Faced with countless options and many different ends of the game, players must weigh in on every choice they make. As you are offered this mysterious Mattis Key, the question arises: should you buy it, and is it worth it?
Who is Mattis in Baldurs Gate 3?
Mattis is one of the tricky Tieflings in Baldur’s Gate 3. You will first find him at Emerald Grove, selling various items of no significant benefit or benefit whatsoever. Here is the list of his items:
- Shovel – 1 Gold
- Starfish – 5 Gold
- Fork – 1 Gold
- Bucket – 1 Gold
- Ring of Infinite Wishes – 4 Gold
- Ring of Lekinesus – 3 Gold
- Tarbell’s Guide to Distractions – 10 Gold
- Ink Pot – 10 Gold
- Plate – 1 Gold
- Potato – 2 Gold
Even those rings do nothing. Nevertheless, you will find Mattis again on your way to Underdark at Light Light Inn. As you engage in conversation with him this time, he will start talking about a secret key, originally owned by Mol but given to him to hold onto. However, he can sell it to special, reliable customers, including your character. The key costs a pretty penny, but it’s certainly worth buying the Mattis key.
Buying Mattis Key Opens Secret Areas
The said key costs 1,000 gold, and if you have the required amount of gold, you should go ahead and buy it. Either way, you should get the gold and obtain Mattis Key. The adamant reason behind the decision is the fact that this is the Tower-Shaped Key, and it opens several secret areas.
The key uncovers a secret entrance in the Mason Guild, found southwest of Last Light Inn. This entrance leads you downstairs to the guild’s basement using a hatch at the back of the room. Once you’re in the basement, you can use the Tower-Shaped key to unlock another door, but only after you pass a Perception check.

Is Mattis Key Worth It In Baldur’s Gate 3?
Taking into consideration that the key is set at 1,000 gold this early in the game, it is probably not worth it. However, once you realize what Mattis Key opens in Baldur’s Gate 3, you will definitely want to have it.
