Once you have the Caravan Strongbox, head to the Zhentarim Basement and speak with Zarys. She may refuse to accept the chest, but in that case, you only need to rest and wait until Rugan returns to base. After that, talk to Zarys again, and she will accept the Caravan Strongbox.
As a reward for honest work, you will receive the following awards:
- Harold Heavy Crossbow.
- New items in Merchant Brem in the Zhentarim Basement.
Of course, the weapon is far from perfect, and the game is full of more powerful alternatives, but the Brem store is a helpful reward. If you want to open the Caravan Strongbox in BG3, you must pass a Sleight of Hand check of 20. But even if you succeed, the reward is not very high:
- Iron Flask
- 11 Gold
- Potion of Invisibility
The potion and gold are a good reward, but you can get it almost anywhere, so it’s not what you want. On the other hand, with Iron Flask, you can free the Spectator, the one-eyed monster imprisoned within. It has about 100 HP, so defeating it is not easy. But the bad news is that you will not receive any reward for winning.
The second useless battle will occur after you return to Zhentarim Basement and speak with Zarys. Whether you’ve taken the contents of the Caravan Strongbox or just opened it, you’re in for a battle initiated by Zarys. It is a terrible consequence because apart from the fact that you will not receive any worthy reward, you also will not unlock new helpful items in the Brem store assortment.
