If you decide to salvage Winterhome, you will gain approval from the Stalwarts, who prefer to stay in New London. Your next goal will be to harvest the Cores inside the abandoned colony. Note that you will still need to establish a temporary settlement and deal with the poisonous gas in this region.
Of course, you can also obtain Cores from other areas, and that still counts toward your objective. You will need this material to upgrade your generator so you can survive the upcoming Whiteout.
On the other hand, settling in Winterhome will make you closer to the Pilgrims. This path will require you to slowly move your base from New London to this new colony.
