Starfield embraces the roleplay aspect beyond character and ship customization. The game also gives you various choices and decisions, big and small. In the Freestar Collective faction mission “Surgical Strike,” you are put in the position of making such a decision. It centers around choosing whether to kill Maya Cruz in Starfield. So, before you feel compelled to reload to undo your decision regarding this NPC’s fate, we’ll discuss everything that can happen.
The Maya Cruz Story
Before you are ever forced to spare or kill Maya in Starfield, you’ll learn she’s done quite a few things to put herself into hiding. You’ll wind up fighting the advanced robots this technical genius designed before you encounter her. When you finally find her, you’ll undergo a brief battle. She’ll give up pretty quickly, and here is when you are presented with the following options:
- I’m not leaving until I get some information about the First.
- [Attack] You leave me no choice.
- How has life kicked you around?
The first two are different ways of exploring the decision to spare or kill Maya in Starfield. Let’s check out the consequences of both routes in this Freestar mission.
What Happens When You Kill Maya in Starfield?
If you choose to kill Maya in Starfield, you can obtain the Encrypted Slate. Alongside that, you can loot her corpse for the following items:
- 2868 Credits
- 3KV LZR Cartridge (50)
- Arc Welder
It isn’t the best loot you can get in the game, but it’s valuable. So, if you’re in it for the loot in Starfield, go ahead and kill Maya. It doesn’t have any lasting consequences in any questlines. Plus, it plays into those of you who are running more ruthless characters.
What Happens When You Spare Maya in Starfield?
If you don’t want to kill Maya in Starfield, you can instead have a brief conversation with her. You still won’t learn much about the First, but she’ll freely hand over the Encrypted Slate and go about her business. The woman is dying already, so she’ll walk over to her bed and lie there to await her inescapable fate.
Again, there are no consequences since Maya’s already on death’s row and will eventually perish. There is nothing else to be said about the woman after the mission is complete.
So, sparing or killing Maya is not one of those meaningful choices despite what it feels like at the moment. You can do whatever you wish or whatever aligns with the character you’re roleplaying.
