‘So Fake and Unlikeable’: Michigan Residents Slam Haley Stevens, Despite Her High Spending in TV Ads

As the Democratic primary approaches in Michigan, Senate candidate Haley Stevens is ramping up her ad spending, but the strategy may not be as effective as it first appears. Multiple Michigan residents recently criticized Stevens, arguing that she’s spending too much on attacking her Democratic opponent, Abdul El-Sayed, and not enough on explaining her own platform.

As reported by The Detroit News, Stevens is set to outspend El-Sayed by a 12-to-1 margin on TV ads, according to tracking data. The figures show how heavily her campaign is relying on advertising to gain an edge in the race.

Stevens has represented Michigan’s 11th Congressional District in the U.S. House since 2019, and this is her first campaign for the U.S. Senate. However, before she can face the Republican nominee, she must first defeat Abdul El-Sayed in the Democratic primary.

Michigan Residents Criticize Haley Stevens

Stevens’ spending on TV ads did not sit well with some Michigan voters on Reddit’s r/Michigan. According to one local: “When a campaign spends more time attacking its opponent than explaining its own platform and what it plans to accomplish, that tells me what I need to know.”

Someone else agreed: “Exactly. She has so many commercials, and I still have no idea what her position on anything is. All her commercials do is attack Abdul and say Obama mentioned her by name once.” Another person complained that “so much of the money is spent on those ads FEATURING Obama to give the illusion of an endorsement, which she doesn’t have.”

Folks criticized Stevens with comments such as: “Stevens is so fake and unlikeable. Her policy is ‘Brown guy bad,’ and in the general election, if she wins, it will be ‘Orange guy bad.’ There’s a reason democratic socialists are on the rise. They actually have a clear, direct message and talk about actual policy and how they plan to achieve it.”

Others, who remained more neutral in the debate, at least acknowledged that “her position is that of the mainstream Democratic Party. She’ll be a party-line vote for anything that comes up.”

In any case, it remains to be seen whether Stevens’ heavy investment in TV ads will pay off or whether El-Sayed, despite spending far less, will ultimately become the Democratic nominee.
