Yet another Netflix cartel series is currently its biggest trending original. Sofia Vergara stars in Griselda, which dropped yesterday (January 25) to a dominating position on Netflix’s charts. Audiences have been gobbling up the drama that has transformed the Modern Family star into a drug lord, with 818 million minutes watched.
The series is a fictionalized retelling of Griselda Blanco, a real cocaine trafficker who ruled a major drug empire. The drama shows her rise and how she does everything in her power to establish herself in the criminal underworld.
Sofia Vergara Dominates the Charts in Netflix’s Griselda
Since yesterday’s drop, the series has dominated Netflix. It is well over other series like Fool Me Once (657 million), American Nightmare (602 million), and Money Heist: Berlin (395 million). It is the number-one show in most of the West, with significant appearances in North and South America and throughout most of Europe.
Looking at other platforms, the only series to be outperforming Sofia Vergara’s Griselda is Alan Ritchson’s Reacher on Prime Video. The action series has maintained over a billion minutes watched for about two weeks.
It has not been only about the views. Reviews from audiences and critics have been praising the series and its leading star. On Rotten Tomatoes, the series has an 88% from critics and 88% from audiences. The critical consensus reads that the star “impressively disappears into the role of Griselda Blanco in this propulsive gangster saga, which plays loose with the facts but achieves genuine grit.”
Griselda was created by Narcos co-creators Carlo Bernard and Doug Miro with Justified writer Ingrid Escarjeda. It also stars Alberto Guerra, Martín Rodríguez, Juliana Aidén Martinez, Jose Velazquez, Orlando Pineda, and Martín Fajardo.
All six episodes of the limited series are available on Netflix.
