Sony announced at CinemaCon that they are making a sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife. According to Deadline, this will be the fifth film in the Ghostbusters franchise. The original Ghostbusters and its first sequel were directed by the late Ivan Reitman, who passed away in February. Ghostbusters: Afterlife was directed by Reitman’s son Jason, and it took place several years after the events of Ghostbusters II. While the film’s reviews were mixed, it still performed well enough at the box office and with fas to merit a sequel. This is likely due to the film being a love letter to fans of the Ghostbusters franchise.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife Saves Franchise
The success of Ghostbusters: Afterlife has given new life to a franchise that seemed to be asleep. A reboot was released in 2016, which received mostly positive reviews. However, it was a major box-office letdown, and the negative reviews the film did receive were scathing. TV Over Mind chalked that failure up to male fans not being happy with a female-led cast and moviegoers finding the film underwhelming. Ghostbusters: Afterlife, in contrast, delighted fans by bringing back original cast members and making many callbacks to the beloved franchise.
Who Will Be Part of Sony’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife Sequel
Sony has only just announced this project, so it’s unknown who will be part of the Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel or if Jason Reitman will return to direct. However, the previous film was primarily about introducing the next generation of ghostbusters, so we will likely see cast members Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, Logan Kim, and Celeste O’Connor return. However, one can only hope that Wolfhard being cast won’t keep us waiting for another three years for the last season of Stranger Things.
