Earlier this week, Sony announced its acquisition of Bungie, the creator of the Halo series, for the price of $3.6 billion. After Microsoft bought Activision Blizzard company, Sony made this acquisition for the enormous price of $70 billion. Bungie is mainly known for its online first-person shooter series, Destiny, and it seems Sony is interested in making a movie based on it in the future.
After the compilation of the acquisition, Bungie would still have full creative control over all of its projects, which means the studio can publish their game for other consoles as well. However, Sony has other plans for Bungie’s fan-favorite shooter.
In recent years, Sony decided to bring some of its exclusive video games to live with The Last of Us series in development for HBO and Uncharted movie just around the corner. It seems that making a movie based on Destiny was part of the original plan of Bungie’s purchase by Sony. Hiroki Totoki, the financial director of Sony, said in a statement that Sony wants to turn Destiny into something more than just video games.
“[It’s] not just for [the] gaming area, but the multi-using of IP and merchandising of IP – like a game title may be put into movies,” Totoki said. “Bungie wants to nurture the IP they have in a multi-dimensional manner, and that’s their hope. For that, we believe we can help that – we have [Sony] Pictures and [Sony] Music, and Bungie can leverage our platform so that their IP can flourish and grow big.”
The Destiny movie might be confirmed much sooner than we anticipate since Bungie hired executives with movie and TV industry connections last year. It seems the studio decided to partner with a company that knows the nature of making movies and video games.
Destiny 2: The Witch Queen is the next DLC of this game that will be released on February 22, 2022, for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
