Microsoft has long since been dominating the market of value in the gaming space. Ever since the initial idea of paying monthly for new games, the value for a publisher like Microsoft was perfect. Quickly capitalizing on it with further releases and studio acquisitions, Game Pass has transformed since it started in 2017. Now offering options for both console, streaming, and PC platform options, Game Pass has never been more accessible. With other publishers trying to follow like EA Play and Ubisoft Plus, Sony has been taking some notes. While they have experimented with offers for free games in the past, it seems that the need for something more substantial is clear. In a Video Game Chronicle report, God of War and Twisted Metal creator, David Jaffe, stated Sony is building a PlayStation Subscription service rivaling the Xbox Game Pass empire.

While this news may come as no surprise to many, it does follow in PlayStations’ recent track record. Releasing a whole PS Plus Collection with the launch of the PS5 and their entire Play at Home initiative, their openness to providing more free experiences is evident more than ever. While these offers have also yet to be extended with more content, it seems that their success is bringing new interests for Sony. While it’s unclear what a new subscription service for PlayStation platforms will look like, Jaffe stated that the service would have to do more than just emulate older PlayStation titles like PS Now.

In order to take on Microsoft’s monopoly with Xbox Game Pass, they have to know that offering just the bare minimum with online play won’t cut it. Knowing the company’s direction and leadership, Jaffe is confident that a new content stream will be put in place. Bundling in newer titles whilst they launch is going to be crucial for the success of this subscription.
