Sophie Turner is getting candid about the not-so-rosy parts of a divorce. After two years of marriage and eight years together, Turner and singer Joe Jonas called it quits in September 2023. Their divorce, which started off tumultuous, was finalized after a year. Now, the Game of Thrones actress is speaking about her life as a single mother.
In a new interview, Turner admitted that raising her two daughters after divorcing her ex-husband hasn’t been easy. While promoting her upcoming TV series Joan, in which she plays Joan Hannington, a single mom and jewel thief in the ’80s, she explained how much her life resembles the characters’.
“If I hadn’t been a mother, I don’t know if I would have been able to bring the same energy that I did into it. It’s such a struggle being a single mother.”
She continued, “Joan doesn’t go about it in the best way … but it is amazing to see her really fighting for her daughter. Turner then talked about how single motherhood is still being stigmatized. “There’s so much shame that comes with motherhood,” she lamented. “You go to work, you’re shamed. If you don’t go to work, you’re shamed.”
The 28-year-old, who began filming months before the divorce, credits the series with giving her “a lot of strength.” Turner confessed to The Sunday Times, “Joan changed me quite a lot…The series came around at a time in my life where I had to be ambitious, and I had to have such strong will and fight.”
