Soulframe is shaping up nicely– well, even nicer than before. Broadcasting live from their 10th annual convention, Digital Extremes has shown off brand-new gameplay featuring everything from a menacing three-headed boss to a swamp-dwelling wizard. More importantly, there are upcoming big changes to how we grow our Envoys.
Big Updates for the Big Bear
First up is Bromius, the new Omen Beast boss fight and his corresponding story. He was teased near the end of the old Prelude build, and Digital Extremes is now following up on that story. In the current timeline, however, Bromius has become a corrupted three-headed creature in a gloomy underground world called Neath’uns, filled with twisted Sproutfolk and tricky environmental puzzles.
Sounds brutal for such a whimsical creature? You ought to get used to that in Soulframe. We’ll all need to rehabilitate Bromius from the dark whispers corrupting its sap-infested form, with a quest being an allegory for alcoholism. And of course, there’s always someone responsible for corruption in nature in Soulframe lore, which brings us to the next part of the update.
New Boss & Enemies
Also making its debut was the Wazzard of Wastes, a magical mini-boss lurking deep within the Galvinar swamp. This rotting thaumaturge will apparently put your parrying skills to the test, though there are other avenues of gameplay, thankfully. Magick-focused combat fans, this one’s for you, as the demo mostly covers that aspect of combat.
Fashion-frame is Improving
But it wasn’t just about bosses and enemies. TennoCon 2025 also revealed the first wave of hairstyle customization options coming to Soulframe. We’ll all soon be able to pick from eight different hairstyles for our Envoy characters, with more cosmetic upgrades in development.
Progression Vision
Last but not least, Digital Extremes also shared their vision for combat progression, inspired by medieval martial arts manuals. Basically, you’ll get to mix and match fighting styles to fit your playstyle, which includes being a parry-heavy tank, a reckless melee fighter, a ranged attacker who closes gaps stylishly, or someone who supports the squad with tactical abilities.
The Doors are Opening Up Gradually
If you’re itching to get your hands on Soulframe, there’s good news: you can sign up for the pre-alpha Preludes build right now. Just head to Soulframe.com and register by July 20 at 11:59 p.m. ET so you can jump in early. After that, sign-ups remain open, but new players will be queued until more slots become available.
Now, don’t you worry because Digital Extremes says they’re committed to learning from the community and aren’t afraid to take risks to make Soulframe something special. And honestly, from what we’ve seen at TennoCon 2025, they’re well on their way.
