Several protests have taken place across the country in recent weeks, with the next major demonstration set for May Day on May 1, 2026. Centered around the theme “Workers Over Billionaires,” events are planned in multiple cities, including Columbia, where some participants also intend to protest the Trump administration. However, organizers have faced criticism online, particularly on Reddit, as some users argue that asking people to take time off work on a weekday is impractical.
Recently, a user identified as “jk4532” shared a post on the Reddit community for South Carolina, claiming that organizers in Columbia are also planning to protest the Trump administration during May Day. The article, which originally came from ABC4 News, also mentions how those in Columbia are planning to protest and march down to the ICE office in the city.
However, this time, the May Day protest has not been well received by some users on Reddit, largely due to its timing. Unlike previous large-scale demonstrations, which often took place over the weekend to allow broader participation, this year’s event falls on a Friday. As a result, some commenters have raised concerns about the practicality of asking people to take time off work to attend.
South Carolina Redditors Unhappy About May Day Protests
While several people around the country are on board with the May Day protests, some in South Carolina, or at least in the state’s subreddit, don’t seem to be too happy about them, which has shocked many other Redditors in the post.
“You’re right. I can’t afford to miss a day.“
“People are mad because organizers keep pushing the inconsiderate calls to action onto working people. At the very least, schedule this on the weekend when fewer people have to work and don’t have to worry about school, as opposed to asking them to skip it. Not everyone has the luxury to call out of work on a moment’s notice.“
Still, there are some other individuals who keep supporting the protests, regardless of when they take place.
“Keep up the good fight!“
“Trade a shift. Call in sick. Just don’t shop. Read a book. Go to the library. It’s not that big an ask. The bigger deal is the Voting Rights Act getting gutted again.“
It remains to be seen how the May Day protests will unfold, though online reactions indicate a clear divide among commenters.
