You have three tries to guess why we’re doing a Resident Evil speedrun this week. If you guessed something other than “because Resident Evil 7 just came out,” you are zombie chow. After filing through several games in the series, Resident Evil 4 was chosen due to its being regarded by many as one of the best games in the series. You would think, on the highest difficulty, that even the zombies at the start of the game would do more than just stand there and let him waltz on by. And because this is an any% run, out-of-bounds and sequence skips are fair game, like the one demonstrated at thirteen minutes in. A lot of the video may seem like he’s simply jogging through each of the areas, but this run really shines during the scripted sequences when running past enemies isn’t an option. Later parts of the game give the impression that something’s always lurking around the corner, even in this speedrun.
The runner list on speedrun.com shows that new times are being submitted for the game even today. One of the most recent, in the NG+ PC version, is from less than a week ago as of this writing. Spending so much time on the move and dodging combat ironically makes it more interesting for the runner, as they’re able to focus on finding ways to cut time. Resident Evil 4 continues to be one of the best games in the series, for regular play and speedruns.
Scared of zombies? Try this colorful run of Kirby’s Return to Dreamland instead. It’s much softer and squishier.
