It feels like ages ago that Spelunky released to the world and took it by storm. I was still in my console days, which feel very, very far away at this point. Those were the days, and I remember Spelunky fondly as an adorable little platformer. Quite honestly, it deserved all the praise it got at launch, and hopefully, that praise will only continue with today’s announcement. Spelunky is finally getting a sequel, eight years after the original launched. Following a delay, Spelunky 2 is coming to the PS4 on September 15th. The news was announced during PlayStation’s State of Play event, and you can find the gameplay segment below.

Spelunky 2 looks to take what made the original game so special and improve upon it with new visuals and gameplay features. One of the biggest and, in my opinion, the most exciting changes is online multiplayer. Finally, I’ll be able to hop into the world of Spelunky with some friends and enjoy the challenge together. Games like Battleblock Theater prove that games of this style are better with friends, so that has me excited. There’ll also be a hub world, where you can bring along adventurers and make them part of your family. If there’s one thing the team is focusing on, it’s definitely the feeling of connectedness for Spelunky 2.

As you might’ve expected, each of the worlds is going to feel much better than Spelunky 1. They’ll be filled with new things to find and ways to manipulate the landscape, making no two runs the same. Not to mention all the new tools you can get your hands on. There’s too many to name here, so it’ll be up to you to find and utilize them as best you can.

With many changes to the game, along with better visuals and more options, players are going to enjoy Spelunky 2 and should find even more to love when the game releases this September. What do you think of Spelunky 2? Does the original Spelunky hold a special place in your heart? We’d love to hear your stories, and make sure to stay tuned at The Nerd Stash for all your news, reviews, and more!
