The sequel to developer Mossmouth’s hard-as-nails indie hit Spelunky has been delayed beyond 2019, according to an announcement by creator Derek Yu.

The original Spelunky was 2D Platforming Roguelike released in 2013 by Derek Yu at Mossmouth, which was set apart by its extreme difficulty and influence taken from the game Spelunker in a sort of homage. The game saw the player venturing into a series of shifting mine shafts in search of a golden treasure. The mines were loaded with enemies, a variety of traps, angry shopkeepers, spikes, pits, and a variety of other colorful obstacles that were always very eager to make you dead. The first game’s difficulty curve was off-putting to some, though extremely endearing to others, and hence a lot of excitement has been stirred for the sequel.

Spelunky 2 follows Ana, the daughter of the first game’s protagonist, as she follows in the family legacy of spelunking by setting off to explore mines in the far reaches of space. The gameplay trailer shown above shows off a variety of features that will be new to the sequel, namely the ability to play with friends, online play, and of course a bevy of new mechanics, traps, and enemies to help make you very dead. We see lava pits, riding dinosaurs, dart traps, more spikes, multiple playable characters, golden idols, ghosts, angry shopkeepers, and so much more both old and new to fans of the original Spelunky.

Both the game’s creator Derek Yu and publisher Blitworks have kept direct expansions of explanations of what has been shown of the game to a minimum, though Blitworks did have this small tidbit to share on their official website: ” The sequel to the critically-acclaimed roguelike platformer Spelunky is in development and coming to PS4 and Steam! In Spelunky 2, the story deepens as more randomly-generated adventures beckon. What new secrets are lying in wait…?”

Spelunky 2 is still set for release, but not for 2019.
