Last month brought in over $1B at the box office and June could also be heading towards a similar figure. Though at the box office for this weekend, Melissa McCarthey and company was able to push through the rest to bring in $30M for its opening weekend.
The first weekend of June had a slew of releases which included Spy, Insidious: Chapter 3 & Entourage. Combined with holdovers from last month it was a tough weekend for movies though Spy managed to bring in $30M which was higher than last year’s Tammy which also starred Melissa McCarthy as the lead. The comedy has been receiving great reviews leading up to its release though with a tough slate of films to release over the next couple weeks including next week’s Jurassic World and later this month, Inside Out. Spy will most likely take a big hit and will probably fall short of $100M.
The rest of the box office included last week’s San Andreas which dropped a decent 51% with a $26.4M take. The film has reached $92M and should reach $100M some-time later this week. The disaster film staring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will finish between $120M – $150M.
Horror sequel, Insidious: Chapter 3 brought in a so-so $23M which is a similar take to May’s Poltergeist. This was a huge drop from the second instalment as it brought in around $40M when it opened two years ago. Though Insidious: Chapter 2 opened in September. The horror film should be able to bring in around $50M by the end of its run.
At the fourth spot, the third new release Entourage brought in $10.4M. The movie opened a bit early last week as it opened on Wednesday which brings its five-day total to $17.8M. Mad Max: Fury Road brought in $7.9M which was enough to push Pitch Perfect 2 out of the Top 5.
Check back next week when Jurassic World debuts!
