Stan Lee, the legendary comic book writer who created, essentially, every single character in your local movie theater over the last 10 years, has had to cancel a few appearances over the last few years due to declining health. Unfortunately, Lee had to issue a last minute cancellation of the Big Apple Comic Con this weekend due to those same health issues.
To Lee’s credit, he is 94 years old and still maintains a pretty robust travel and appearance schedule. Big Apple Comic Con released the following statement on Instagram:
It reads: “IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!!!” Big Apple Comic Con has just been informed that due to health issues Stan Lee will NOT be appearing at the convention Saturday March 11th or Sunday March 12th. Stan keeps to an amazing schedule and it seems to have taken its toll. We are terribly sorry for any inconvenience but the show must go on. We are going to have a tremendous weekend loaded with great guests, exhibitors and events. For those wanting to purchase items autographed by Stan, the Stan Lee Collectibles booth will be in hand with a variety of signed items. Let’s all wish Stan well and party like you know he wants us to! OUR REFUND POLICY: No refunds on admission tickets, but refunds/exchanges are available for those who purchased Stan Lee’s autograph, photo ops, or the Swag Bag.”
Hopefully, the “health issues” cited are standard “Stan Lee is a 94 year-old man who travels almost constantly and needs a break,” and not “Stan Lee is really, really sick.”
2017 was supposed to be Stan Lee’s final year making appearances on the road at conventions. Hopefully he is able to recover and make it to some of these shows for a last hurrah on the Con circuit.
