Star Wars: The Old Republic is now available to play completely free on Steam nearly a decade after its launch. The original game released on December 11, 2011, and you did have to spend some credits to buy it. The game features a subscription service and paid DLC, and in-game currency players can buy if they so choose. Despite that, there is plenty of content for those who choose to forgo paying to play. The official Star Wars: The Old Republic blog said the following:

Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ is now available on Steam! The Steam platform provides a new way for players–Padawan and Master alike–to play, discuss, and experience The Old Republic. Now you can earn new trading cards, emoticons, and more all while playing your original characters with full cross-save and crossplay, on or off the Steam platform!”

For anyone who bought the game previously, there is hope of not losing your content. All of the progress players completed in the nine years since the game hit shelves will carry over to the Steam version. It also released with unique trading cards showcasing characters in the game, emoticons, and backgrounds. But diehard players will have to wait for achievements to release as they are not yet available for the Steam version. Over 100 of them will be added before the end of the year.

The newest content available for The Old Republic is Onslaught. The free expansion launched back in October and is the eighth update for the MMORPG.

Join the battle for supremacy in Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ – Onslaught, the dramatic new digital expansion from BioWare. Unite with your friends or battle alone against deadly enemies both new and old as you aid the faction of your choice in the reignited war for the future of the galaxy. Whether you support your allies as a die-hard Loyalist or undermine them from within as a deadly Saboteur, your choices will decide the fate of the galaxy. Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ – Onslaught is now live, free to all subscribers!”

The events in Star Wars: The Old Republic takes place thousands of years before The Phantom Menace. While no film or series has touched on it yet, Knights of the Old Republic one and two took place during the same period. It was a time when the Sith is at their most powerful and are sent across the galaxy in a great war against the Jedi. The MMORPG plays rather similarly to World of Warcraft but has much more in common with its fantasy counterpart Neverwinter.
