There has never been a shortage of health trends that seem to be more performative than helpful. They’re typically viewed as trendy lifestyle changes and diets meant to appear less harmful. Now, it seems that the latest trend is living, hydrogen water. A cafe owner in Sedona, Arizona, took to TikTok to celebrate her restaurant’s Kangen Water machine, and commentators have a lot to say about it.
The above video was posted to the TikTok account @christineslayter, which belongs to Christine Slayter, an expert on Electrolyzed Reduced water and where to procure it. According to the website linked in her profile, she suffered from chronic illness and constant fatigue until she discovered the aforementioned Electrolyzed Reduced water, which allegedly improved her condition drastically.
In the video, she takes one of the machines that creates what is known as Kangen water to the Living Chocolate cafe in Sedona, Arizona. For context, this is water that is processed through a machine to separate tap water into alkaline and acidic streams. Many people believe that this water has various health benefits that regular water cannot contribute, though others are more skeptical of this.
‘Hydrogen Water’ Takes Sedona, Arizona, By Storm
The owner of the cafe, Shari Lynn Flam, can be seen trying the water out and making a statement about it, saying, “I know this water was sent to me by god. I know how much better I feel from drinking it.” She even takes a moment to bring her glass to the camera and explain, “So, you can see, maybe you can’t, the bubbles in it. This is hydrogen water, living water.“
This particular statement is what really turned the comment gears on. Just about everyone in the comments of the video seem to be skeptical. Some of the top replies include, “hydrogen water is frying me😭😭😭 what does she think the H in H2O is” and ““Living water” = just electrolyzed tap water. Slightly higher pH, same hydration. Imagine paying $4K to plug your sink into a car battery and call it holy water 💀“
Indeed, you can see that the water machine is connected to a sink in what appears to be a kitchen area within the cafe. Despite the backlash within the replies to the video, Shari seems happy with the decision to include it on the menu. She even takes a moment to clink glasses with a few other employees to celebrate the occasion.
