A remake of Super Mario RPG: The Legend of The Seven Stars has been announced during today’s Nintendo Direct. It’s set to feature enhanced graphics 3D art style for fans new and old alike to enjoy. Super Mario RPG will launch on November 17, 2023.
Those who played the original game will fondly remember its timing-based battle system tear relied on hitting enemies at the right time to get the edge in battle. It’s a mechanic that has been consistent in future Mario RPG titles like the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi series. It appears the remake will faithfully recreate this battling system while also incorporating new mechanics, though precise information is so far thin.
First Super Mario RPG Looks Charming & Faithful to the Original
The original Super Mario RPG: Legends of Seven Stars was launched on March 9, 1996 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and developed by Square Enix. It features the first-ever RPG adventure starring Mario, Peach, Bowser, and a host of new characters. They partner up with Mallow and the star guardian Geno to stop the evil Smithy from using the seven pieces of the Star Road to take over the world.
The characters of Geno and Mallow are legally owned by Square Enix, so the question of whether they will be able to return in future Mario titles is still up in the air at this time. For now, however, they will return for the first time in over 25 years in this remake.
The Super Mario RPG remake will officially launch on the Nintendo Switch family of systems on November 17, 2023. Pre-orders are available now on the Nintendo eShop.
