Deloitte shares yearly trends studies based on surveys; one of the recent releases in the 17th annual Digital Media Trends study shows some fascinating things about the gaming industry. The survey found that the gamers of today want to “integrate” or mix the act of watching movies and playing video games with each other. The study also reveals that 45% of the consumers that were surveyed wanted more games based on their favorite movies and TV shows.
This only goes to show why games like Hogwarts Legacy did so well that even the game’s publishers weren’t expecting it because the trend in gaming is leaning toward this direction. The game was based on the popular Harry Potter franchise of movies/books and was one of the most popular games of the year. The same can be said for games based on the Star Wars IP, like the upcoming Knights of the Old Republic Remake.
Survey Shows Nearly Half Of Gamers Want Movie-Based Games
Oddly enough, this survey shows that all the different forms of entertainment and media consumed by us are converging and being consumed simultaneously. Look no further than the phenomenal narrative and story-telling of games like God of War Ragnarok or Red Dead Redemption 2. 49% of gamers even said that they discover new music from video games that they have played. 44% of players said they decided to play a certain game after watching that game’s TV show or movie. So maybe The Last of Us TV show might have put more controllers in the hands of players than initially thought.
Finally, the survey confirmed something we’ve all already known, that video games have become a notable way of socialization among the upcoming generation. That games like Fortnite, Overwatch, Apex Legends, and many others act somewhat like a social media network in some ways. For instance, 62% of “committed gamers” mentioned that playing video games with their friends online is a common way of spending time together. Not only that, but 40% of millennials and Gen Z respondents stated that they socialize more in video games than in the real world. A concerning, yet interesting, prospect indeed.
