Another day, another video game release date pushed back. This time, the news comes from independent developers Burning Arrow in regard to their very first title, The Other 99. The game had been set to release just a few days from now on July 11 for Steam Early Access, with PS4 and Xbox One release dates following soon after. Now, The Other 99 has been pushed back to August 25th. The Other 99’s publisher, Deck13 Interactive (Lords of the Fallen) has issued a statement confirming the delay saying, “With the additional time the development team will have a bit more time to polish the Early Access version even further.”
The premise of the game is simple. Players find themselves on a “desolate, windswept Hebridian island” with only a note in hand. The note cryptically reads, “The only way off the island is through the other 99.” It kicks off from there, and as players make their way through the game, they are able to decide between stealth and a brutal visceral combat in order to survive the island and ward off the game’s titular other 99 NPCs.
Burning Arrow’s description of the game promises to stretch your humanity to a breaking point as you fight to gather food, water, and weapons on an island “where you have nothing. Where you are nothing.” It would appear The Other 99 is trying to carve its mark in a genre that is already saturated with unsettling first-person horror narratives. It is a big feat, though not impossible, and seeing Burning Arrow’s fresh approach to the genre will definitely be something to anticipate. The premise alone is intriguing, as the game aims to be couple the survival and the psychological, with a strong emphasis on human nature.
Though little information is known about the game, this could be a deliberate choice on the part of the developers. Allowing players go into the story somewhat blind only adds to the unnerving experience as you have to make your way through the island.
