Susan Crawford, who emerged victorious in the Wisconsin Supreme Court race over Brad Schimel, later admitted that she never thought she would take on the richest man in the world and win.
Former president Barack Obama and U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders backed Crawford for her race to the Supreme Court. On the other hand, her opponent Schimel was supported by President Donald Trump and Elon Musk.
In Crawford’s speech after winning the election, she expressed joy at winning, even though she ran against an opponent the wealthiest man in the world supported.
“As a little girl growing up in Chippewa Falls, I never could’ve imagined that I’d be taking on the richest man in the world for justice in Wisconsin, and we won!”
This was met with cheers and loud applause from the audience. Following Crawford’s victory, Obama took to X (formerly Twitter) to congratulate her.
“Congratulations to Judge Susan Crawford on her victory, and to the people of Wisconsin for electing a judge who believes in the rule of law and protecting our freedoms,” the former president tweeted.
Sanders, who also supported the judge’s campaign, spoke about Crawford’s victory over Schimel and Musk.
“Congratulations Wisconsin on electing Susan Crawford. As a result of your strong grassroots organising, you have defeated the wealthiest person on earth. You have set an example for the rest of the country. We can do it,” he wrote on X.
During Schimel’s campaign, the Tesla CEO allegedly donated $20 million to the campaign. He also gave out two $1 million donations during a rally in Green Bay to further show support for Schimel.
Susan Crawford’s Victory Highlights Elon Musk’s Giveaways
Many high-profile personalities and politicians reacted to Crawford’s victory on social media, citing that the Space X founder’s wealth couldn’t help him.
Ron Filipkowski, a former state and federal prosecutor, wrote, “He [Musk] wore the cheesehead hat in WI. Spent $20 million. Paid people to sign petitions. Paid people to canvas. Did million-dollar giveaways. A rally. TV interviews. But I guess people in Wisconsin didn’t appreciate an oligarch trying to buy their civil liberties.”
The governor of Minnesota, Tim Walz, also reacted by saying, “Wisconsin beat the billionaire.”
Other citizens have reacted, saying the people of Wisconsin made the right choice.
“The power of the people is stronger than the people in power,” one person said. Another user penned, “A clear message has been sent to Musk. You can’t buy Wisconsin. I love that Crawford not only won but won so convincingly.”
More citizens have expressed their support for the new Supreme Court judge, saying they are happy with the outcome despite Musk’s influence in the campaign. The billionaire is yet to react to Crwford’s win but his pockets must be feeling the loss…at least a bit.
