In the pilot of Swarm, the Amazon horror series by Janine Nabers and Donald Glover, there was a sex scene that was inspired by a real hook up story the musician told his collaborator. Nabers spoke to Insider about how a guy holding a bowl of strawberries in front of his junk was not only done by the character seen in the show but done by Glover.
In the scene that was inspired by the sex story told by Donald Glover, Dre (Dominique Fishback) met a guy at a bar (Rory Culkin) who she had sex with. After losing her virginity, she wakes up to him standing there with a bowl of strawberries covering his meat. He then awkwardly offers her a strawberry to start the day.
“Donald told this very funny story about a girl who he really liked, and how after they hooked, he was standing there with a bowl of cherries, just being like, ‘Hey.’ She was like, so not into it, because it’s so weird to hook up with a guy that you barely know and then wake up with him holding a bowl of cherries.”
After telling the story, the Swarm co-creator told Donald Glover that his story would make for the sex scene in the show. He allowed it, and she “ran with it.”
Donald Glover told a hook up story that inspired the sex scene in Swarm
The series follows Fishback’s character as she goes from a fan to someone going over the edge because of that obsession with a pop artist. The two creators established their creative style that mixes drama and comedy with Atlanta. In this case, they have transferred to horror with hints of comedy that retain their sense of style and delivery of social commentary, particularly when it comes to Black stories.
As funny as the sex story was from Donald Glover, more than that inspired the show. Nabers spoke about being a “Black woman” would have the story “rooted in that.” They also examined “online stan culture” for the story of their villainous obsessive fan. Ultimately, to her, it is about Dre and her sister’s (Chloe Bailey) relationship while exploring how she becomes a villain.
The first season of Swarm is available on Amazon Prime Video.
