Talk About Another Health Problem, and You Could Get Charged for It

That’s how American healthcare works

Medical bills are hard enough to discuss, but one Indiana woman and her boyfriend were shocked to learn they might be billed for talking about her health problems with her doctor. Reddit user lhagans13 shared a printed notice his girlfriend received and was quite frustrated with the warning: “If you bring up a medical concern(s) during today’s appointment, you will likely receive an additional charge.

“If you even MENTION any of these things, you WILL LIKELY get billed for it???” lhagans exclaimed in frustration. He went on, explaining that he’s upset his girlfriend was afraid about telling the doctor anything because she didn’t want to get charged for it. “I find it insane how greedy and money-hungry a place that’s supposed to help you can be,” he angrily concluded.

Since this is the couple’s first time hearing about it, their irritation is understandable. However, a quick look at lhagans’ post on Reddit shows many people weren’t surprised to hear about such a notice for a doctor’s appointment. “This is now standard practice due to insurance billing codes in the US,” pointed out a commenter, adding that it’s not just related to women’s wellness visits, either.

“It’s been like this for many years. You are only allowed to have one ailment at a time,” chimed in another user. “You need to make another appointment if there is something else you would like to address with the doctor.” Of course, patients aren’t literally restricted in how many ailments they bring up during an appointment. However, addressing additional health problems can change how parts of someone’s visit are billed, depending on one’s coverage and the services they received.

A Free Preventive Visit Could Cost Money, Depending on a Few Factors

According to HealthCare.gov and CMS, some plans might cover preventive services for free, but this isn’t always the case. During a preventive visit, a patient undergoes screenings, checkups, and general counseling. However, if a patient raises an active medical problem and the provider evaluates or treats it beyond the scope of the preventive service, that additional work may be billed separately.

This is why a free preventive visit could end up costing a patient money. In lhagans’ case, he didn’t mention being charged but instead brought up a common practice with many insurance plans in the States. That doesn’t mean everyone agrees with it, of course.

As one Redditor wrote with irritation, “This is not mildly infuriating. It is massively infuriating. Absolute [expletive] that this is the state of our health care system,” and five thousand people agreed with their upvotes. Still, the distinction is that coverage for preventive services doesn’t necessarily extend to additional evaluation or treatment performed during the same appointment. After all, the grand majority of medical services are never free in the first place.

The takeaway is that it’s crucial to ensure clear communication between a patient, their provider, and their insurer about payments. On one side, the notice lhagans’ girlfriend received was doing her a favor by being transparent about potential charges if additional medical concerns require evaluation during her visit.

On the flip side, it’s also understandable why someone would be upset that a wellness exam could feel like an anxiety-inducing nightmare of possible fees, discouraging patients from ever mentioning their issues.
