The pair continued to ignore talking about their breakup until the British actor finally broke his silence in June. Fans were surprised he opened up about his personal life. Apparently, Swift had the same reaction.
According to OK! Magazine, the singer never expected her ex-boyfriend to publicly comment about their separation. “[She] was definitely shocked,” an insider said. Since Alwyn is a private person, Swift thought he would have wanted to avoid bringing further attention to himself by never mentioning her again. After the opposite happened, the songstress was understandably taken aback to see his comments about her in The Sunday Times.
During a June 15 discussion, the publication asked Joe Alwyn about his thoughts on Swift’s latest album. The Tortured Poets Department, which dropped in April, is rumored to feature several songs about the pair’s breakup. Although Alwyn didn’t directly answer the question, he did speak candidly about how the speculation surrounding their split has affected him.
I would hope that anyone and everyone can empathize and understand the difficulties that come with the end of a long, loving, fully committed relationship of over six and a half years. That is a hard thing to navigate. What is unusual and abnormal in this situation is that, one week later, it’s suddenly in the public domain and the outside world is able to weigh in.

Alwyn acknowledging that he and Swift were in a “fully commited relationship” appeared to slam speculation he was ever unfaithful towards the singer. Since people will continue to form opinions about him based on rumors, Alwyn said he has come to terms with the public “dissecting” what could have went wrong between him and Swift. “There is always going to be a gap between what is known and what is said. I have made my peace with that,” he said.
Alwyn opening up about his breakup with Swift was seemingly a one-time thing. An insider said he will no longer be “entertaining” any questions about her. While things didn’t work out between them, he supposedly holds no grudges towards Swift.
