Texas Democrat James Talarico argued that Jesus would challenge both major political parties if he returned today. He made the remarks during an interview with Charlamagne tha God about religion and politics. Talarico described Jesus as more radical than either party and tied that radicalism to love, justice, and peace.
Charlamagne asked which political party would feel most uncomfortable if Jesus returned. Talarico answered, “I think both political parties would be deeply uncomfortable.”
He said Jesus was “far more radical than any political party.” Talarico clarified that he did not use “radical” to mean extreme.
He traced the word to the Latin term for “root.” Talarico said Jesus went to the root of problems through “deeper love,” justice and peace.
Talarico said Jesus would challenge both parties to pursue a “more radical vision for democracy.” He linked that vision to expanding rights and opportunities for more people.

Talarico’s refusal to single out either party became a major point of disagreement in the responses.
One X user argued, “I’d argue the right would be more uncomfortable, his economic radicalism cuts against their core. What’s your take?” Another went further, writing, “A radical is anyone that the establishment doesn’t like. The GOP would throw Jesus in jail and call him a communist.”
Others challenged Talarico for placing Democrats and Republicans together. One response stated, “Not a great answer. Democrats’ policies supporting the underprivileged, the homeless, the marginalized, immigrants & refugees more aligns with Jesus teachings than Republicans current fascist policies of tax cuts for the rich & inhumane tratment of migrants!”
Another wrote, “This response sucks. Charlemagne knows the right answer so does Talarico this both sides gabrage he keeps doing is why he will never be a national candidate. There’s one party who everything they say is against Jesus teachings and one party aligns. Simple.”
Some responses backed Talarico’s refusal to choose a side. One user wrote, “Jesus wouldn’t be aligned with any political party. That is the correct answer.”

Talarico did not identify either party as more compatible with Jesus’ teachings. His decision to place both parties under the same challenge remains the central point of dispute.
