Texas Family War as Selena’s Brother Sues Sister Suzette for $1 Million and Accuses Her of Hiding a Decade of Their Sister’s Profits: ‘Utter Disregard’

The family that spent three decades guarding Selena’s flame is now fighting over it in a Texas courtroom, brother against sister, with their mother’s name already on the other side’s statement.

The battle landed in a courthouse on Thursday, when A.B. Quintanilla III filed a 14-page petition in Nueces County suing his sister, Suzette Quintanilla Arriaga, and the family’s Q Productions entities for breach of contract and breach of fiduciary duty. Selena’s brother is seeking more than $1 million, attorney’s fees, and the demand at the suit’s core a full accounting of every dollar the legacy has generated since January 2016.

The fight runs through an agreement as old as the grief. Selena was murdered in 1995 at just 23, without a will, and that May her family formalized how her legacy would be shared in a contract executed by Suzette, mother Marcella, husband Chris Perez, and A.B. himself, entitling him to 25 percent of net profits from Selena’s entertainment properties, her name, voice, image, and likeness included.

His suit claims the legacy’s business machine stopped paying him properly nearly a decade ago, and that the family’s public story never matched the books. Per the petition, Suzette assumed operational control of Q Productions around 2016, with their father delegating CEO duties while publicly appearing “as if he were in official control until his passing.” A.B. says he discovered the alleged underpayments in spring 2025, requested the full books, and the defendants “failed or refused” to provide them.

The war went public before it went legal. On September 1, A.B. told his Instagram followers: “Yes, there is a lawsuit related to Suzette Arriaga, as well as to facts and circumstances related to my father, Abraham Quintanilla.” A day later, Suzette and Marcella jointly answered that no complaint had been served and no public case could be found, which was accurate at the time, as the filing came eight days later. A.B. countered with a redacted legal letter accusing his sister of “utter disregard for her fiduciary duties to the Estate’s beneficiaries,” and summed up the rupture in four words “This comes from years.“

The timing carries its own ache. Abraham Quintanilla died in his sleep last December at the family’s helm, and the siblings stood together at his farewell. Nine months later, they are adversaries in the county where Selena’s story began, while Suzette, who sued Shein just this spring to protect her sister’s image, has not yet responded to the brother now suing over its proceeds.

The Legacy on the Ledger

The fandom’s verdict spared no one. “Both siblings fighting for the money made out of their dead sister talent,” one heartbroken reply read, while the thread’s most-liked lane crowned an unexpected conscience “chris stays out of it and honestly hes the only one whos ever acted right about her legacy.” Perez, notably, signed the 1995 agreement and is nowhere in this fight. The thread’s thesis needed one line, “When money is involved, family ties don’t matter.“

Thirty-one years of tributes, museums, movies, and music built the most beloved estate in Latin music. One signature from 1995 now decides how it gets counted.

The books, and the family, are about to be opened.
