It’s often during a crisis that people show their true colors. That said, a Texas father showed what his priorities are after his daughter’s accident at a hibachi restaurant. What happened was that the chef was attempting to perform some fancy tricks but accidentally splashed his customers with flaming oil, one being a 16-year-old girl. The oil seared her eye, causing a blister on the cornea. Her friends took her to urgent care, but her dad decided to make a quick Reddit post, asking about his options for legal action while en route to see her.
Thousands of Reddit users were quick to tell the Texas dad that his daughter should not be in the ER but instead see an eye doctor ASAP. An alleged ophthalmologist in the post’s comment section pleads that “urgent care is the wrong place for an exam” regarding an oil burn to the eye. “She needs a proper ophthalmic examination by MD, I can’t stress this enough. Please do not use Reddit for medical advice,” they beg.
It was after this comment that Redditors started to suspect that the dad was perhaps more concerned about the monetary gain from this incident as opposed to his daughter’s well-being. Why else would he make a Reddit post before checking if his daughter is alright in person? “Love how this parent comes here for legal advice instead of medical advice for an eye burn. There is plenty of time for u to sue after your kid gets properly checked out,” one commenter points out. “Yeah, sort of shows where OP’s head is at,” agrees another.
Still, Reddit users did their best to provide ideal suggestions to help the teenage daughter. One individual noted that “she could be facing minor injury and recovery or life-long disability (loss of use) with her vision,” meaning that the “payouts would be vastly different.” Several hundred users upvoted a comment suggesting that the restaurant’s manager be involved, but others strongly disagreed, as this could compromise any potential legal claims in the daughter’s case. It would be best to communicate with the restaurant only through a lawyer, after all.
While the restaurant must compensate for injuring the young girl, people still couldn’t shake off the fact that this was the subreddit the father decided to post on first. “What kind of person stops to post on Reddit before they go to see their daughter who’s in the hospital with an oil burn on their eye?” a person asks in disbelief. “How about making sure your daughter is okay and will heal well before you start strategizing how to make money off this,” another says. Money is very important, no doubt, but a person’s well-being should be the priority.
