Willie Nelson has spent 40 years fighting for rural America, and at 93, he just opened one more front: the AI data centers marching toward the 0.6-square-mile Texas town that made him.
The country icon published an open letter across his social accounts Tuesday, addressed “To whom it may concern and to everyone else as well,” and aimed squarely at the fight arriving in Texas farm country. “I grew up in Abbott, and I still have a home there with farmed land where I can still see stars at night,” Nelson wrote of the Hill County town of fewer than 400 people, 24 miles north of Waco. “And now our community, like many others, needs to fight against data centers invading our land.“
Then came the line heard across the state: “The last thing we need is a loud, water thieving, light polluting, data center anywhere near our town (or any others for that matter). The strength of rural America has never come from big industrial footprints. It comes from generations of people, open spaces, local businesses, and a connection to the land.“
The threat is not hypothetical. As many as 56 data centers have been proposed for the Central Texas region alone, per the Texas Tribune, part of a national boom that has already put more than 3,000 server warehouses into operation with another 1,500 under construction, according to Pew Research Center figures.
And notably, this is not a partisan fight. Texas Governor Greg Abbott, once a champion of the state’s AI building spree, has now called for banning data center development in rural neighborhoods after criticism from lawmakers and voters in both parties.
Nelson wrote from four decades of credibility. The Farm Aid co-founder, who launched the organization with Neil Young and John Mellencamp in 1985 and marked its 40th year in 2025, has raised more than $70 million for rural farmers. He argued the country deserves “thoughtful stewardship” that protects farmland and family livelihoods, and his letter closed with the warning of a man who has watched land fights his whole life: “Whoever controls food and water, controls the masses. Let’s not allow our own demise or give up control over necessary resources in the U.S. and especially in Abbott.“
The Fight Coming to Every Small Town
His replies turned into a national town hall overnight, running overwhelmingly with him. “Willie, thank you for saying this. My family still owns original Cherokee allotment land from those who survived the Trail of Tears. We’re now facing the same fight in Claremore,” one supporter wrote. Another checked in from Lone Wolf, Oklahoma: “Very few here & surrounding towns too are happy about data centers for the same reasons you posted.” A civil dissent surfaced too, with one defender arguing: “Data centers using 1/10th of the land area we use to grow Christmas trees.” And one reply, from a Montana homestead valley named, of all things, Abbott, answered his letter’s most personal line: “The stars still shine bright here.“
Whatever happens next, the man who wrote about blue eyes crying in the rain intends to keep seeing stars over his own.
